GENERAL INFO.:
visual scientist ivan e. is a pioneer and fundamental researcher in the field of visual communication. his area of expertise is spatial-temporal design, i.e. the design in space over time: "motion graphics".


IVAN E. VJ:
since 1994 ivan e. works as VJ in clubs all over switzerland. in the past years his field of activity widened to the surrounding countries (germany, france, italy, austria). ivan e. works mainly in the field of modern electronic dance music: drum&bass, techno, minimal/electro. musical styles are however not binding or limiting to his work. in 2001 for example, he performed for the Dresdner Musikfestspiele together with a symphonic orchestra to a modern classical composition. also, next to his classic VJ works (parties with DJs and VJs) he started several long-term, project-oriented collaborations. the most prominent was with the swiss band swandive for which he created an entire visual world for their live shows during more than 5 years.


STYLE:
ivan e.s visual language is clear and minimalistic. it is based on reduced geometry and limited colorspaces. symmetries play an important role - however, these symmetries are consciously broken down and dissolved playfully. ivan e. uses visual sampling of his own and of found footage together with real-time-generated motion graphics. video feedbacks are another central component of his live-performances.


STATEMENT DESIGN:
today, design no longer takes place within a single time-frame only. the rise of new media opens new challenges, many of which are not yet fully investigated and understood. i feel very lucky to belong to the generation for whom the demands towards design and the possibilities of design can change fundamentally from one year to the next. it is a restless, exciting time. so many new styles are waiting to be discovered - my thoughts about new signs and new visual languages keep me awake for many nights. i pulsate with my visuals, while my visuals pulsate to beat to my time. and this beat is damn fast. restless, but fascinating.


STATEMENT MUSIC&IMAGE:
“wherever music and imagery touch each other, a magic fascination arises within me. these moments may develop in a classic feature film as well as in a VJ performance. as a VJ however, i have the better and more immediate tools to translate my musical impressions into a visual statement. music videos or feature films do not offer the same direct media channels - they require comprehensive planning and preparation - which of course are also exciting aspects of creation. but the extremely musical element of a jam-session, the real-time performance, is in many cases simply indispensable for me. after a day of shooting a commecial or a feature, i am always happy if i know that i am booked as VJ the same night - i then can visually rave and immediately formulate my visions for the music of the DJ.


STATEMENT STYLE:
I am not able and also not willing to define my style. it has constantly changed and developed over the years. i don't want to commit myself to a any school of thought - i want to be open for new things, since my main goal is to investigate and research the "now". of course, some central elements in my VJ-sets will always be ivan e typical. also, i think it is good to have a certain defined style-range, in order to position myself. however, i find it likewise important to always remain in motion and not to close myself towards newly discovered styles. therefore it is central for my work that i not only work as VJ but that i also produce and direct music videos and feature films.
